Psychological Preventative Health (PPH Therapy) was formed in Idaho Falls, Idaho, in 2019, by Melanie Richardson.
Melanie’s experience is in private practice as well as for the Idaho Army National Guard. She has worked with individuals, couples, families, and groups. In addition, she has been part of behavioral health boards, behavioral health planning councils, and public speaking, including briefings for the Military, Native Americans, First Responders, and other community events. She recognized that while therapy/treatment was helpful, it was a little late in order to be effective. Hence, Preventative was added to the name for the focus of treatment and therapy.
The United States is a combative society in regard to medicine, while Eastern Medicine focuses on prevention. PPH’s primary focus is on mental health prevention and bridging the gap between Eastern and Western medicine.
Now serving Ogden, Utah, and Salt Lake City, Utah, Psychological Preventative Health primarily aims to treat the CAUSE, not the SYMPTOM, when it comes to mental health. Symptomatic treatment, while short-term effective, doesn’t fix the cause of the problem. This means that over time, the problems tend to repeat. The following are some of the most common disorders and a brief definition of their causes which need to be adequately addressed.
Anxiety is the most commonly diagnosed disorder and is essentially fear or fear of the unknown.
Suicidal Ideation, along with most mental health disorders, are symptoms of a combination of things. Still, exhaustion/sleep is the number one contributor, followed by relationship issues, a feeling of “no other options,” and purpose.
Trauma is too much emotional pain in the body that is often re-lived via memories. The body can’t tell the difference between real or imagined memories, and thus re-living memories over in the mind often re-traumatizes.
Pain, physical or emotional, can be very good. But, on the other hand, pain is an indicator that something is wrong and needs to be addressed.
Depression, again, is usually a combination of things, primarily environmental most of the time.
Personality Disorders, including Borderline Personality Disorder and Narcissism, are disorders generally stemming from childhood and are a perception issue. Because perception takes so long to create, it takes a while to treat, and therefore treatment is longer than most mental health disorders.
Oppositional Defiant Disorder is most commonly a symptom of boredom and poor boundaries, consequences, and follow-through. This can be treated like most other disorders with effort and consistency.
Relationships require effort, knowing how men and women think differently, and healthy boundaries. Our clinicians can help with this, along with the other disorders.
While these are just a few of the most common mental health disorders that people struggle with, they are not exhaustive. Mental health and therapy is a spectrum, and every individual we serve is unique.
